Stockinger Lab Home

The Stockinger Lab is developing winter malting barley adapted to Ohio and the neighboring Great Lake and Midwest state regions. This project grew out of the longstanding research interest in the genetics of winter-hardiness and the realization that Ohio is an ideal environment in which to produce very high-quality barley for malting and brewing. We are developing varieties that can be used for all-malt brewing and varieties that can be used for adjunct brewing and are studying the genetic factors that confer the differences between these two barley types. We are developing varieties that have superior winter-hardiness, varieties that have disease resistance, and varieties that have resistance to stem breakage and lodging. An underlying goal is to have winter malting barley varieties that are resilient when confronted with diverse environmental variables and ever-changing weather patterns.
